OCF works with innovate software provider RONIN to offer an easy to use self-service research computing front end infront of Amazon Web Services (AWS).
RONIN is a web application that simplifies the use of cloud computing resources for researchers. It allows users to launch complex compute resources, such as clusters and remote desktops, without extensive technical knowledge. The platform provides a user-friendly interface with features like a "shopping cart" design for building customized cloud resources and a project dashboard for managing costs and machines. This approach makes cloud computing more accessible and manageable for researchers and their organizations.
The platform offers total control over machine and cost management, including detailed breakdowns of costs for individual machines and projects. It also includes a "Smart Schedule" feature that automatically turns off machines when not in use to help users stay within their budget. Additionally, RONIN enables users to create and manage machine packages, which are pre-configured environments that allow for reproducible research by packaging up entire compute environments and datasets for easy deployment.
RONIN also addresses common challenges in data management and coding. It simplifies object storage by handling security and permissions, offering features like backups and versioning with a simple button click. For coding, RONIN provides pre-configured environments for popular IDEs like RStudio and Jupyter, making it easy to run code on larger machines. The platform's intuitive design and focus on research have helped organizations, such as the Australasian Wildlife Genomics Group at the University of Sydney, to accelerate their genomic analyses and improve productivity.
