Proxmox
Proxmox is an Austrian open-source software company whose Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) has become one of the world's most popular virtualisation platforms. It is an enterprise-grade, subscription-supported alternative to proprietary hypervisor stacks.
Proxmox VE unifies KVM virtual machines and LXC containers under one elegant web interface with clustering, high availability, live migration, and software-defined networking built in. For research computing environments, this is ideal infrastructure for the service layer around HPC: login nodes, schedulers, license servers, web portals, databases, and development environments.
Proxmox integrates software-defined storage natively. Most notably, Ceph which is deployable and managed directly from the Proxmox interface, plus ZFS with its data-integrity guarantees, snapshots, and replication. Proxmox Backup Server adds efficient, deduplicated, incremental-forever backup of VMs and containers. Together these deliver a complete open storage/protection stack at disruptive economics.
Proxmox supports GPU passthrough and vGPU-style sharing, enabling flexible provisioning of GPU resources to researchers as VMs or containers.
Proxmox's USP is that it delivers enterprise virtualisation without lock-in. It is open-source and complete (compute, storage & backup).
