HPC Upgrade

Newcastle University, a Russell Group institution,  aims to deliver pioneering research that makes a positive global impact by meeting the challenges faced by engineering, the environment, data science, healthcare & life sciences, etc.

The Challenge
The University set three goals: increase CPU capacity to scale up traditional large parallel computing workloads; increase GPU capacity to support proliferating artificial
intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) workloads; and provide access to a wider body of users through technology enablers (remote access, containerization and
a greater use of GUIs), with better user training and support.

Solution
Named Comet, the new cluster has 56 Lenovo ThinkSystem servers powered by AMD CPUs and servers with NVIDIA L40S GPUs. The OCF Steel Stack managed cluster has 2.2 PB of flash data storage underpinned by a Lustre parallel file system

Impact
The University now has significantly more computing power than was available previously. Researchers can now to run larger, more complex models and simulations,
crunch more data, and get results faster.
